Alaska in summer can go from 40°F and drizzling to 70°F and sunny in the same afternoon — sometimes on the same glacier. The secret to packing isn’t more clothes, it’s the right layers. Here’s the no-fluff list.

The layering system (bring this, skip the rest)

  • Base layer: moisture-wicking shirts (not cotton).
  • Mid layer: a fleece or light down jacket for warmth.
  • Outer layer: a waterproof, breathable rain jacket — the single most important item. It rains in the Inside Passage.
  • Bottoms: comfortable pants + one waterproof pair for Denali.

Feet, hands, head

  • Waterproof walking shoes or light hiking shoes — you’ll be on uneven ground in Denali.
  • A warm hat and gloves (glaciers are cold even in August).
  • Sunglasses — glare off water and ice is real.

Don’t forget

  • Binoculars — non-negotiable for Denali wildlife and whale watching.
  • daypack for excursions.
  • Motion-sickness remedy if you’re sensitive (the open water on cruise days can move).
  • A nicer outfit or two for cruise dining.

What to skip

Heavy parkas, formal wear, and “just in case” bulk. Layers beat volume every time.

Everything on our hosted Alaska 2027 Denali & Glaciers cruisetour — from the wilderness lodges to the ship’s dining rooms — works with this exact layered approach, and we send every traveler a full packing guide before departure.
