Italy is the country most travelers compare every other destination to. It’s where Western art was reinvented, where pasta and pizza were perfected, and where 2,000 years of empire, papacy, and Renaissance left a denser concentration of UNESCO sites than anywhere else on earth.

Rome alone holds the Forum, the Vatican, and the Pantheon within a 30-minute walk. Tuscany delivers Florence’s Renaissance and a countryside that produces some of the world’s great wines. The Amalfi Coast hangs villages off cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Sicily and Sardinia feel like Mediterranean countries unto themselves. Venice is impossible to compare to anywhere else.
