Africa has its Big Five. So does Denali — and spotting them is one of the great thrills of an Alaska interior trip. Here’s your field guide.
1. Moose
The giants. Often seen in the spruce and willow near the park entrance and along rivers — a bull moose in velvet is a sight you won’t forget.
2. Caribou
Denali’s caribou roam in herds across the open tundra. Look for them moving in the distance on the park road.
3. Grizzly bears
The park’s famous blond-tinged grizzlies forage on open hillsides, especially where berries grow late in summer. From the safety of a tour vehicle, it’s unforgettable.
4. Wolves
The hardest of the five to see — Denali is one of the few places on earth you realistically might. Keep your eyes on ridgelines and river bars.
5. Dall sheep
The reason Denali became a park in the first place. Look up — these white sheep cling to the high, rocky slopes.
How to improve your odds
- Give it time. More days in the park = more chances. A one-day visit is a coin flip; three days shifts the odds your way.
- Take the naturalist tour. A trained guide knows where to look and spots things you’d drive right past.
- Bring binoculars. Non-negotiable.
